Flip a coin, flip the class!
If you are still hanging around hi hello and thank you,
Before writing this I went to the search engine, the one you and your great-grandmother use, flipped a coin and now I'm going to flip this class.
Flipped learning is when students are introduced to the learning materials before class by pre-recordings done by their teacher. In this way they learn the topic before class and during the class they discuss the topic, solve problems about it or work through assignments.
We designed a flipped class using the ASSURE model. Our topic is future tenses and the difference between will and be going to. Me and my friends made a video for students to watch before coming to class. For the video we each recorded voice memos explaining the topic, we used avatars of ourselves in the video too. You can watch it from here -> click and boom!
After watching this video students have to complete a worksheet, while preparing this worksheet I desinged sections where first students need to use their previous knowledge about the topic, then they need to explain the grammar rule to themselves by using the exercises they did. At the very end exercise they create something entirely by themselves. And since all of this happens before class we added an answer key. Check them out rn!!!
And if you are confused about this class and my summary of the class isn't enough for you here is our lesson plan.
This was such a fun assignment and I'd actually want to see this happen in one of my classes in the future. Technology is now one of the most accessible things in the world but in Turkey let alone having a phone or a laptop there are kids who can't bring lunch to school. While we all can agree that this pedagogical approach has so many upsides and makes teachers' job so much easier I don't think it can be successful in Turkey's public schools.
On a positive note (?) I don't think I'll ever teach in a public schools, not that I don't want to but in a yk I can't kind of way, I'll definitely try this as a private school teacher!!!
Thanks for sticking around and the coin I flipped was HEADS!!!
